Medically Necessary versus School-Based ABA
We get this question all the time: what is the difference between ABA in a clinic through your health insurance and school-based services with ABA consultation? This video reviews some of the main differences. The good news is the goal is the for both services is to have the same outcome: for the child to no longer need the service or consultation. It is important to consider that the best option is individual based on each child's needs and abilities.
Natural Environment Teaching
Natural Environmental Teaching (NET) is crucial because it ensures that children learn skills in the context where those skills are actually needed. Unlike traditional, highly structured teaching methods NET uses the child's natural environment and interests to teach, making the learning more meaningful and durable. We take NET very seriously at Community Behavior Consulting because our goal is always for the child to move out of therapy services.
Beyond the Power Struggle
Challenging behavior is a top concern for parents and teachers. The key to moving Beyond the Power Struggle lies in the strategy of Behavioral Momentum. Rather than engaging in a confrontational power struggle, the adult should ignore the immediate challenging behavior but not the child, instead using "cooperative conversation" and easy tasks to build momentum and validate the child’s need for attention. This humane approach successfully diffuses the situation and redirects the child by offering positive, potent reinforcement, often in the form of quality time and fun, shared activities.
